“omg this advertisement is so progressive and so good and it’s doing such great things for representation and the world and–”

it is an advertisement. it is trying to sell you something. it is using your liberal ideologies to sell you more bullshit. it sees you as a marketing demographic. corporations do not fucking care about you brands are not your friend this will not save you.

this is exhausting and unrealistic bc it fails to acknowledge that, as much as capitalism is a horrific system that needs to be dismantled, it is a very real and intrinsic part of our lived experiences

if we want to dismiss progressive advertising that targets marginalized demographics, we must then dismiss progressive media as a whole, because the majority of media is owned by corporations. sorry, you’re no longer allowed to care about the success of the hunger games and its impact on giving women an opportunity to be action heroes, because scholastic and lionsgate are corporations. loved the fact that big hero 6 starred exclusively biracial poc protags? too bad, disney is the most evil capitalist corporation of them all. celebrating the fact that legend of korra and steven universe star/feature prominent queer characters? go home, idiots, nick and cartoon network are brainwashing you with their capitalism.

and for that matter, we would also need to stop condemning businesses who refuse to open services to marginalized groups. who cares that ubisoft won’t let a woman exclusively lead a flagship assassin’s creed title? you shouldn’t even be playing that game anyway, because of capitalism. mad about how nintendo is handling same-gender relationships in fire emblem fates? obviously you should readjust your priorities to be critical of nintendo for even existing instead.

what makes inclusive advertising important is the fact that it normalizes marginalized identities. that is what we celebrate: not dove for accepting all women’s body types, not wells-fargo giving lesbians money, not hallmark putting their approval stamp on gay marriage. we’re celebrating the inherent normalcy presented in advertising directed at marginalized groups.

because if you think commercials and magazine ads and billboards don’t have as much of an impact on society as the rest of mass media, you’re sorely mistaken.
