who decided popcorn was the official movie food
There’s actually an answer to this. In olden days there weren’t really movie theaters. These guys would come around on carts toting a projector and the reel of the silent film. He’d set up shop, project the film, and boom movie time. Popcorn was the only mass-producible fresh snack that was lightweight and portable enough to travel with so it became synonymous with moviegoing. This stopped for a little while once theaters were actually built because theatre owners didn’t want popcorn getting strewn all over these fancy carpet and chairs. This was the period just before the Great Depression when moviegoing was akin to a night at the opera. But once the Great Depression hit, popcorn came roaring back – it was incredibly cheap to make so it was easy profits for theaters during this time. And it’s been there ever since!
